WHAT DO I DO?

The good news is, so much of it is in your control. Not everything, but a lot. A healthy immune system relies on harmony between mind, body and soul. So yes, a good diet is important, but so are other self-care measures such as sleep, exercise, stress management, laughter, friendship and, oh yeah, clean hands!

TRUST YOUR GUT

It's command central for immune health. Ideally, you want an intestinal environment where the good bacteria thrives and the bad bacteria takes a hike. Here's where diet comes in:

  • Eat lots of colorful, antioxidant-rich, nutrient-dense fruit and veg daily.

  • Add balance with proteins such as chicken, lean red meats, pork, beans and lentils.

  • Choose healthy fats for anti-inflammatory goodness - oily fish, nuts, eggs, avocado and olive oil.

  • Unrefined whole-grains are best - brown rice, barley, oats, buckwheat, popcorn, whole wheat breads and pasta. They are great sources of gut-friendly fiber, selenium, potassium and magnesium.

  • Yoghurts with active, live cultures and fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir and kombucha get and A+ for nurturing healthy gut bacteria.

DON'T SUGARCOAT IT

Get your sweet fix from fruit instead of refined sugar, which can mess with your white blood cells' ability to fight infections. It's not just obvious culprits such as cake and chocolate - added sugars hide in salad dressings, condiments, breakfast cereals... rat out the sneaky buggers by becoming a food label-reading pro.

TAKE THE PRESSURE DOWN

Time out for relaxation isn't and optional luxuary, it's a necessity. prolonged, unmanaged stress is harmful to immune health. Every day, grant yourself permission to slow the heck down. A few suggestions:

  • Bubble bath, glass of vino and an aromatherapy candle.

  • A cosy nook, your feet up and a good book. Ahhh.

  • Remote in one hand and bowl of popcorn in the other. Channel up, channel down. Your call.

  • Knitting needles, a ball of wool and busy hands.

  • Pour a cuppa, call a friend and share a laugh.

WORK OUT.

HERE'S WHY

Exercise boosts the function of natural killer cells that work hard to keep you well. It's also a great way to burn fat and keep weight in cheek, which is equally important for immune health. Moving every day helps lift your mood. Wheather you wald, run, hop or hula hoop, do whatever feels good and gets your heart pumping a little, ora lot. CLOSE YOUR EYES

Getting only a few hours of sleep each night is a monumental act of self-sabotage! You might think you're doing OK, but chronic sleep deprivation depresses your immune system's disease-fighting capabilities. Sleep is your body's precious nightly opportunity to rest, repair and rejuvenate. Go to bed!

WASH YOUR HANDS, GEOFFREY!

Who'd have thought good old soap and water would save us in the war against illness? But here we are!.

SHOULD I TAKE A SUPPLEMENT?

Sometimes it's hard to get all you need from food, so a quality immune support supplement may help. These often contains vitamins A, C, D and E, zinc, garlic, ginger, horseradish and herbs, including olive leaf extract, echinacea, elderberry and astragalus.

A pro-biotic is also a good idea, especially if you've been taking an antibiotic for a bacterial infection. (They don't work on viruses so use with caution as overuse is bad news for immunity!)

SHOULD I GET A FLU SHOT?

Yes. Unless you've been otherwise advised by the doc, guidelines recommend an annual flu vaccination for everyone aged over six months.
